Excursion Fail

So sorry I haven't checked in lately. I've been busy and haven't really had a lot of time to sit down and blog to you all. I still need to fill you in on the amazing trip to Istanbul (one of the coolest cities in the world); but that will come later.

Today we had a planned excursion to visit the quaint island of Hydra, about a two hour ferry ride south of Athens. It was going to be filled with mountain climbing, exploring the beaches and possibly renting a donkey or horse to ride on with my shirt off, sword in my hand and woman at my side!

Sadly, the weather was absolute shit today. We woke up at 6:30 to get ready, barely had time to scarf some food before we were supposed to meet in the lobby at 7:15 to catch our bus. We went outside and it was absolutely pouring. I internally thought if travelling over water and going to an island on a day like this would be a good idea but shoved it away into the recesses of my mind. We waited for a while for our bus to show up, it finally did and we embarked on our journey. We got to the ferry port, I purchased a coffee and spinach pie for a little snack as I was still a bit hungry.

We boarded our vessel and took off. I gave the rest of my pie and coffee to Meera who hadn't eaten anything yet. About a half an hour into the ride, the waters seemed like Posiedon had cursed us himself. Meera and about half of the other girls who were with us ended up getting sick. I even have to admit I started getting a queasy stomach; the spinach pie and coffee didn't help at all. We bobbed up and down on the Aegean Sea like a rubber ducky in a baby's bathtub. It was probably the worst travelling experiences of my life. I felt bad for Meera who not only had stomach issues, but she's deathly afraid of large bodies of water. At one point I was walking to the bow to chat with Tavis and both my feet flew up in the air as we took a massive dip.

Our ferry didn't even make it to Hydra, as we had to turn around at the island of Poro (spelling?). This is where I lost my trusty purple umbrella I purchased on my intoxicated night from the Why Sleep? club. I'm very crushed. I loved that umbrella. The ride back was a piece of cake thanks to Hannah buying a massive supply of Dramamine to knock everyone out. We slept for most of the way. My own return trip was fueled with musical scores by John Williams. Dramamine + "Hook" soundtrack + swaying ferry on the open water = awesome.

Now we're back at the residence. I want to go work out to let out my frustration on a wasted excursion. All was not a complete loss. Got to listen to some sweet tunes on the way back and had a head resting on my shoulder for most of the way :)

More to come later ---> Adiosas

Greece is So Awesome

I love this place. Great food, friendly people (for the most part) and awesome friends that I've made here on the program. Last night we went out to the dance clubs in the section of the town called Kerameikos. It was such an amazing night (although my wallet would disagree). We started out the night by prefunking in our room to massive amounts of tequila, beer, and Jaegermeister. The trip downtown itself was eventful enough as we "Iced" each other on the bus and were complete clowns. We got down to Kerameikos and spent most of our time at a club called Why Sleep? (fitting right haha). I spent so much damn money at the bars but honestly I don't care; it was so worth it. For some reason though our group kept getting split up throughout the night as we hopped from different clubs throughout the night trying to find everyone. But throughout all the chaos and mis-happenings, we made it home safe. Meera, Hannah and I took a cab back while my partner in crime, William, didn't return till 7am! Besides the massive hole in my wallet and an enormous hangover, I would have to say it was one of the better nights of my life :)

On Friday, our group took an excursion to the island of Aegina. It was so amazingly beautiful with blue waters of the Aegean and the island of Salamis in the background. I'll try and post some pictures later of how epic it looks because me blogging it doesn't do it justice. The coolest part were the scooters we rented! Meera and I teamed up and toured the island, assisting Jamie and Linh getting gas for a good deal, then hitting the back roads. We drove through the valley in between the mountains and eventually made our way up to the Temple of Aphaina on the highest point of the island. I can't really describe how calming it was to be up on top of the mountain, cherishing this amazing time I'm having in the country. We made our way back down to the main port, had lunch and headed back to Athens. It's been an amazing time here so far and I feel so blessed to have the chance to be here. Here's a picture of Meera and me on the scooter (which I managed to not crash into anything or injure us both).

I'll keep trying to blog as soon as anything happens to let you all know I'm still alive and haven't fallen into a setting in the movie "Taken".

Epic Lightning

Sorry I haven't blogged in a while. I get done with the day and am too tired to rehash everything that went down. I'll try to fill you in.

The past few days we've been going on excursions into town to retrieve costumes, makeup, audio/visual equipment and scout out locations. The subway is the fastest means possible, but with strikes from 12-4 and wednesdays being shut down entirely, we have to coordinate our trips to avoid being trapped or not going at all.

I missed the group trip to the Acropolis because I slept in on Sunday (that's what I get for being lazy). Hopefully I can go take a trip to see it this Sunday (free on Sundays). But we've gone to the New Acropolis Museum, which holds an amazing collection of the archaeological findings from the Acropolis over the centuries. The coolest part was the giant lioness statues and the overhanging of the Parthenon. Sadly, no pictures were allowed in the museum so I have nothing to post other than this one of Theokoles and the Acropolis from a rock face:

In other news, the stray cats and dogs still run the streets rampantly and the women are still beautiful. Our film we started shooting on Monday is going well. We shot the fight scene at the small amphitheater today and dress Will and Tavis up in "robes" that we found at a lingerie store. I run the microphone and help out with all the equipment. I also have a small acting role in the movie as Nancy's boss at the airport. We're going to try and film at the airport next week. Hopefully they let us get access to the areas we'll need. It's been fun so far but a lot of work.

Oh and the title of this blog is because of Europe's lightning and thunder. I was upstairs storyboarding with Arnold and we all saw this flash. I paused and asked "Did somebody just take a picture from across the street?" Next second, the loudest ear shattering thunder echoed throughout the city and shook our building. I hopped out of my seat and just started cursing like a sailor. It was pretty damn funny.

Good night. More to come.

Subway Penis Games, Getting Stranded and Sudden Realizations

Merry Epiphany!

We recently discovered that everything in the city will be shut down today due to the celebration and honoring of the Epiphany, in the Eastern Christian tradition when Jesus was baptized. So basically today was a lazy Thursday, with minimal things accomplished. Although we are having a white elephant epiphany gift exchange tonight so that will be fun.

Last night was festive as we journeyed downtown to Keiramikos, which is just north of the Acropolis. We had drinks and appetizers and I tried grappa for the first time. I warn you, if you don't like your innards being cleansed by engine cleaner, then I wouldn't suggest this drink. When I ordered the drink from the waitress she suggested not to have it but I insisted that I wanted to try the Greek alcohol. It gave me a pleasant buzz but I think I'll just stick to Ouzo. I also tried the Greek equivalent to Bud Light, Mythos. It was really similar to Landshark or another light lager. All in all it was another good night enriched with alcohol to fuel the social lubrication and delicious crepes.

Will and Tavis (another companion on this European adventure) are absolutely ridiculous. I contemplated just leaving the subway due to their hilarious, but immature, playing of the "Penis Game". For those of you who aren't familiar with the penis game, it is usually played by two people in a setting where screaming "penis" isn't the best (libraries, subways, classrooms, etc). The game ends when one of the players yields to the other, refusing to scream "penis" any louder. It was pretty bad as I looked around and there were about 20-30 angry and annoyed Greeks staring at our group because of good ole' Tavis and William. Really hate being American in that setting.

On our return trip from downtown we were stranded at the metro bus stop in downtown Agia Paraskevi. Meaning a good 30 minute excursion trying to figure out where our apartment was. We eventually made it back to the main square, after singing "Arnold is so Cool" the whole way home. I haven't told you yet about "Arnold is so Cool". It's an amazing song Will and I came up with about this guy, Arnold:

Pretty much Arnold is one of the coolest dudes ever and the song goes however you want it to.

Anyway, on our way back to the apartment, as we were crossing the street from the main square, Meera (another companion on the trip) slipped on her heels and fell right on her ass. Right as she fell, a car of Greek guys slowed down to laugh at her. I was ready to throw some bows'. I obliged Meera with a piggyback back to the apartment as I felt really bad for the girl. Needless to say, she ended up with quite a bruise today.

In other news: the deadly feral cats that roam our neighborhood have been making the most frightening screeches at night. I'm starting to understand what Gerry (our RA) said about not leaving the doors open at night. I don't want one of these bastard felines to start clawing my innards in my sleep. Rachel (yet another companion) seems to think they are adorable.....I'll keep my distance.

Tomorrow we are taking a group excursion to the Acropolis and the New Acropolis Musuem! Long have I awaited to stand on it's majestic steps, calling out to the gods and challenging them to a duel! It will be a glorious adventure. I'll litter the blog with pictures for you all.

Hopefully I can purchase a cell phone or a SIM card to allow me international calls so I can talk to some of you back home. I actually like not having a cell phone these days. Very liberating.

More to come from my Greek adventure later~

Some pics

So this is one of the three beer towers we purchased while at Oktoberfest. I'm sure all of the Greek locals in the restaurant were looking at us with utter disgust at these drunken American kids. Dear god it was good beer though. Our fellow student, Tavis, got quite wasted off these suckers. Stumbling home was fun.

Sweet view outside the apartment of the mountains in the background of Greece. Oddly Greece reminds me a lot of souther California in climate, architecture of the buildings and general trash everywhere.

View of Athens from the top of the campus. Beautiful city.

Sweet Orthodox church nestled in the corner of the college campus. Couldn't get inside to take pictures of the artwork, but it was pretty amazing.

On our epic adventure up the mountainside along Deree College, we happened up the Greek Othodox church and this statue. William is doing an epic mimic of some saint.

Apple Cider, Olympic Gyms, and Ouzo

So yesterday Will and I walked around touring the campus. It has great facilities with a large gym (one that the Olympic team trained at), Olympic sized track and soccer field, Olympic pool, awesome library, and open air amphitheater. It sits on hillside overlooking the rest of Athens. My initial feelings towards Athens have subsided and I'm growing to like this city more and more each minute. The shops here are small and quaint run either by an old couple or burly bearded men with monstrous black beards. One negative still is all the dog shit. Dog crap everywhere on the streets due to the massive amount of strays all over the city. Walking anywhere involves navigating the sidewalks -which are absurdly skinny in my opinion- and avoiding stepping into a steaming pile of doggy doo doo.

Had a great workout yesterday at the Olympic gym -haha that sounds so awesome saying that. Afterwards a huge group of us went to a restaurant called Oktoberfest. At Oktoberfest, I had the best beer of my life. It was so flavorful and packed a punch, 8.9%. The beer I had was a Hofbrau Strongbow, which tasted like apple cider and left a soy sauce aftertaste. It was absolutely delicious. Our group talked for hours, enjoying our beer and food. It was a great time bonding with everyone in the inebriated state we were in. A few of the other girls came and we decided to buy not one, but three meter long beer towers. These gigantic tubes resembled an actual bong filled with beer. Let's just say by the time we left the restaurant we were all very happy and full. But the night doesn't end there....

After the restaurant, Will and I were determined to try the national liquor of Greece: ouzo. We wandered over to a street-side vendor who happened to sell pints of ouzo. Our group bought some and went back to our apartments to enjoy the black lickerish tasting alcohol. I fell in love with the drink and would recommend it to anyone willing to try.

Last night was great. It was a genuinely fun night where I got to know the group better and made an effort to know each person better on an individual level. My initial negative feelings towards Athens have gone away as I'm getting used to being in this city. People here like to stare at us, mainly cuz they know we are American. But they are very nice when you greet them with a "kallimera" (good morning) or a simply "yasou!" (hello!). The women I've seen so far all have beautiful eyes and olive skin. I think I've found heaven. So far, it's proving to be quite some time.

I'll be getting some pictures up here soon with additional captioned stories as well.

Final notes:
-Ouzo is awesome
-Dog crap everywhere
-Beautiful campus and women
-Beer towers = great night

Arrived in Athens

So our plane from Amsterdam arrived in Athens 1:35 Athens time and when we got off the plane we were greeted by an extremely large man wearing a red tie and hold a sign "American College of Greece". The first thought in my mind was "Oh great this is how movies like "Hostel" and "Taken" are actually played out in real life. He turned out to be our bus driver to take us to the college, so my bad for judging within the first few seconds of seeing him. We waited around for about 30 minutes for the other 9 students arriving from Paris then we loaded up the bus and left for the college.

On observing the landscape and city itself of Athens, I came to a conclusion: it is a mixture of wealthy businesses and struggling decrepit old buildings falling apart. Mercedes dealerships right next to dilapidated apartments with empty billboards tagged beyond belief. A countryside villa with accompanying pool and a hovel of tin sheds and brick buildings right next to it. It's very green here, with plenty of rain and lightning to welcome us on our arrival.

When we arrived to the American College of Greece, after winding back and forth through the tiny streets, we were greeted by our RA, whom I will just call Gary due to his incredibly long name that I have no idea how to pronounce. The rain was absolutely shitty when arriving so that didn't help the first impression I had on where we were staying. We were given a key and an ID card and told to wait for the orientation on Monday at 4. Will and I marched up the stairs onto the second floor and opened up the door. Brendon Beardsley had already set up his room to the right with Arnold so Will and I took the room to the left. Small rooms. Comparable to the rooms at Pikes. Twins beds, small closet and almost no room to move around. The RA came to our room and gave us a little speech on dos and don'ts. He emphasized on how to not leave our patio door open at night due to the chance that the rabid street cats could enter and cause havoc. This could be the quote of the trip, but chances are, more are to follow.

After unloading my clothes I realized I brought way too many damn shirts. Like, I could clothe a small village in Zimbabwe. I'm going to find the first orphanage I can around here and donate them some UW drifits. Our fridge came with some food in it, compliments of our RA and DEREE college. Some bread, ham, salami, yogurt, oranges, apples, orange juice and apple juice, milk, cereal and coffee. Knowing how Will and I eat, this food will maybe last us till tonight. After settling in, I got on Facebook a bit and tried to read some of the pamphlets the college had provided us but due to me staying up a consecutive 24 hours without sleep I simply couldn't focus on what I was read. Will and I already were experiencing the firs stages of delirium as mostly anything we cracked a joke at caused us to erupt in thunderous laughter. For instance, we came up with our own pseudo Swedish language in which every words begins with a V. "Voochen vichen vowchen viken" was a popular one and when we called to Brendon in the kitchen with a "VICHEN BRENDON!!!!", I knew we were just being stupidly tired. I yielded at 6:48 to my pillow after brushing my teeth and washing my face. I was out by 7:00.

I woke up at around 10 from Will screaming in his sleep "THREE QUARTER, THREE QUARTER TURN!!!" Great alarm call. I was hungry and made a sandwich then fell asleep again. I just now woke up at around 4:50 and have been up eating an early breakfast and making this blog.

So far Athens sucks. We live too far away from downtown for it to be cool. I'm hoping this trip won't simply be a waste of $7,000 dollars. When the sun eventually comes up, I'll go exploring around campus and see what this god awful town had to offer.

My greatest obstacle I've had to overcome is dealing with the toilet/toilet paper issue. If any of you know me, you know I have an active metabolism causing me to frequent the bathroom, mostly after big meals. The plumbing system here in Athens is one much to be desired and can't handle an overflow of toilet paper. Actually, no toilet paper can go down the toilets. So the paper has to go somewhere right? Well, let's just say the garbage in the bathroom is slowly getting fuller and fuller.....

More to come later.
